《群仙祝寿图》是“海上画派”杰出代表任伯年的经典之作，原画保存在上海美术家协会，鲜有机会与观众见面，而在本届上海世博会上，由20多位艺术家耗时8年用木版水印技艺复制的《群仙祝寿图》将助阵上海活动周，公开展示。“木板水印”，这是什么东西呢？

木板水印是一种印刷文字和图案的技术，广泛应用于东亚地区，起源于中国古代，是一种在纺织物上进行印刷的方式。

woodblock printing，其实也就是将原画以类似浮雕的形式刻在木板上，然后再印到纸上或者布上。细想，要将精致的原画作一笔不差地刻到木板上，该是多艰难的工作。这里用到的木板，wood block，是被当成模子使用的，即relief matrix，浮雕模子，具体的要求就是：

the areas to show 'white' are cut away with a knife, chisel, or sandpaper leaving the characters or image to show in 'black' at the original surface level

显现出人物、风景的部分，在木板上是用刀或者凿子、砂纸磨空，其他部分染上墨之后就留黑，空出图画部分的白色。
